Getting paid with Stripe (restricted key)

How to connect your own Stripe account with a restricted key to take card payments in over a hundred currencies. The money goes straight to you.

With Stripe you take card payments in over a hundred currencies. The account is yours: Stripe charges its fee and the money goes straight to your bank. You connect it with a restricted key, which only allows what's needed to take payments: it's the way Stripe recommends giving access to a service like DojoTally.

Creating the key in Stripe

  1. Go to your Stripe account → Developers → API keys → Create restricted key.
  2. Give it a name (for example "DojoTally") and grant write permission to Checkout Sessions, Webhook Endpoints, PaymentIntents, Charges and Disputes. Everything else, no access.
  3. Copy the key: it starts with rk_live_.

Connecting it in DojoTally

  1. Paste the key into Stripe restricted key.
  2. Tap Connect with the key. DojoTally tests it by registering the payment notifications on your account: if the key is missing a permission, it tells you which one and nothing is left half-configured.
  3. Done: students can now pay by card from their portal and from payment links.
The key is stored encrypted. If you disconnect it, DojoTally removes the payment notifications from your Stripe account and stops using the key. To test without real money, use a test key (rk_test_).

Payments go straight into the student's account. If a payment is refunded or disputed (a chargeback), the payment is flagged and we notify your team.
